Waking Up In Heaven

by Melissa Grannon

I have died but I just don’t know it yet. One minute I was driving in my car, and the next I am waking up on a beautiful white sand beach. I awake and realize the sun is so very bright and the ocean is so very blue and the sand is as soft as powdered sugar. I look around and seeing nothing but absolute beauty. I am scared but, excited at the same time. I don’t know how I have gotten here however, it is very awe inspiring. I sit up and rub my eyes and think that I must be dreaming. I know that I will soon wake up and realize this is not real.

I look down at the beautiful blanket I have been lying on. It is the brightest and purest white I have ever seen and so very soft. I stand up and look around beyond the beach area I see a grassy field with a well traveled path. I decide to follow it. I began walking on the path. I realize I am barefoot and stepping on stones but it doesn’t hurt. In fact I realize I have never felt this good in my life. I wonder for a moment if I haven’t been drugged. I look at my body it has changed. I had been overweight and had many health problems. This body was not mine. I was thin and my skin was smooth and perfect. I suddenly want to look at myself in a mirror. I realize there is a dressing area ahead and hope there is a mirror there.

I walk inside and it is just one beautiful room with marble floors and all the walls are covered with mirrors. I see that I am wearing a simple white sundress and how very thin and young I look. I can’t be more than 18 years old. I look at every part of my body in the mirrors. My scars are gone, my hair is its natural color and very healthy. I look at my teeth they are perfect, it seems as if I have entered someone else’s body. I keep looking for someone else to tell me where I am but, cannot find anyone. I leave this building and head back out on the path. I walk down the path never looking back.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a large tiger starts running toward me. I know I should be scared. I am about to die. I could never out run a tiger even with my new young body. The tiger leaps at me. I cringe and realize this is the end. I am certain I will wake up from this strange dream. When the tiger leaps he knocks me to the ground and licks my face. He begins purring and nudging me to get back up. I notice he has a collar on. The collar is beautiful and covered in gems. I realize he is someone’s pet. He seems to want me to follow him. He continues to purr and nudge me. I am talking aloud to myself and the tiger.

“Where, did you come from boy? Where, is your owner?” The tiger continues on looking back at me making sure I am following him. Soon a lion appears and gently nudges me and follows along. I begin to think I have lost my mind. I am in some strange place following two large cats through a field not knowing where they are taking me. I keep following the two unlikely friends and we approach a hill.

It has a road going up it unlike anything I have ever seen. It sparkles in the sun and looks like it could be very hot too walk on. When, I place my feet on the road it feels like the softest carpeting I have ever felt. The lion and tiger keep going up the hill. I notice I never tire, or can’t keep pace with them. They never show any signs of aggression or make me uneasy. As we top the hill the lion and tiger approach a gate.

It is a large gate it is wrought iron and there is a man standing near it. He is dressed in a white robe with a gold belt. He is smiling and saying welcome. I ask this man “Where am I?” He looks at me and laughs and says “You are in Heaven.” I enter the gates...
