Summer Night At The Beach by Tammie Ainsworth

It was in the middle of June and it was at dusk. The smell of the ocean was heavy in the air. The beach was nearly empty except for a couple walking along the shore line. They were in their middle thirties and they were walking close while holding hands. A couple of gulls flew over head as they listened to the sound of the waves crashing close to them. The sun was about to dip into the horizon as the night inched closer. They stopped to gaze up into the dusky sky. Purples and pinks streaked the sky. A golden hue could be seen where the sun inched its way into the ocean. A few white puffy clouds lined the once blue sky.
In the white sand was a pink shell. The woman bent down to pick it up. She brushed the sand from the shell and smiled at it before she tucked it away in a pocket. A soft breeze lifted a lock of her hair and the man brushed it behind her ear as they continued to walk along the beach. They stopped at the sound of a dog barking and turned around. A German Shepard came running up behind them and they both smiled. Their dog met up with them breathing hard. The man leaned over and patted the dog’s head. The night sky grew darker and they headed back to their blue and white house at the end of the beach.
When they reached the door to the house, they looked back for one last glance before the golden sun finally dipped into the black ocean and the white stars darted across the sky. A whale could be seen leaping from the waves then diving back into the ocean. Cries from the gulls were heard throughout the night.
