Every summer, Jenna and her family went to the beach and met up with friends from all other places. Jenna and her best friend Dave never got to see each other during the winter. Every year on the second day of summer vacation Dave Jenna and Dave's little brother, who he called Crab, would play Frisbee on the beach. Jenna put on her swimsuit and sunscreen and ran down to the beach to found Crab sitting with a rather sour look on his face. Dave was down by the water talking to a new girl Jenna had never met before.
“Hi, Crab. Are we going to play?” Jenna asked with a small frown. “Is Dave playing too?”
Crab wrinkled his nose. “No. Dave has been spending all his time with Amy. He says Frisbee is for babies. He says 12 is too old for Frisbee.”
Jenna laughed and shrugged. “I am 12 and I still like to play Frisbee. You and I can play.”
Crab smiled and nodded and the pair played with the Frisbee. Jenna noticed that Dave looked over a few times. He seemed sad that he was not in the game. Jenna smiled and waved, but stayed with the game of Frisbee and had fun with Crab.
That evening Jenna and Dave and their families all went down to the beach with the other families who were staying nearby. Jenna saw Dave with the same girl as before and went over to say hello to them both. Jenna saw Dave holding hands with Amy. But Dave hated holding hands with girls and never held hands with Jenna. It confused her.
“Hello Dave. We didn’t get to talk earlier. How are you?” Jenna smiled. Amy gave her a sour look and pulled Dave away from her. Crab frowned and tugged his ear.
“Amy does not want to share Dave. She says he is her boyfriend.”
Jenna frowned and looked at Dave. “Well I am his best friend and you are his brother.” She sighed and went after him.
“Dave, you can be my friend still. And you will always be Crabs brother. Just because you are with Amy does not change that.”
Dave sighed and looked at Amy then at Jenna. “Jenna is right. And the two of you can be friends too.”
Amy looked at Dave then Jenna and Crab. “I would like to have more friends this summer. I am sorry. Back home there is a girl named Lucy who would try to take all my friends from me. I guess I was afraid you would try to take Dave like she does.”
