When Elvis first began his career and for some years after, my father wrote auto insurance for Elvis Presley. When I was about eleven years old, he was called to write some auto insurance for a friend of Elvis for whom he'd bought a car. I was always and Elvis fan and I was very excited when my father asked if I wanted to go to Graceland with him. This would have been back in the seventies and Elvis was in his prime. This was such a big deal to me that I don't remember that my younger sister came too - I was so totally focused on Elvis. I can remember driving through the gates, up the long, winding driveway.
My father left me (and my sister too, I guess!) in an office in the back. (The office is no longer there.) There was a big picture window and I can remember standing transfixed, hoping that Elvis would come out the door. I have no idea how long my father was inside Graceland, I only remember that Elvis finally did come out the back door. He was dressed in black leather and he hopped on a motorcycle and roared down the driveway. It was the thrill of my young life!
