Our Last Days in the Caribbean

by Daniel H.
(Bethpage, NY)

I have always had the dream of retiring to an island in the Caribbean. I would spend my remaining days on a lounge chair watching the sparkling blue waves crash against the white sand, with a frozen drink in one hand and my beautiful, bikini-clad wife in the other.

I would thoroughly enjoy the peace and there would be too much to do to ever get bored with the island lifestyle. I would spend my time navigating the sea on my boat and diving under the waves to collect dinner or explore the ancient treasures that have fallen to the sea floor.

On the most beautiful days, we would wade out into the ocean and allow ourselves to be tossed around by the waves. The local reef brings an unimaginable variety of fish in every size, shape and color as they dance around us without fear. We would float upon the sea and breath in the salty air and the soothing sounds of nature.

On special occasions, like our anniversary, we would dress up in our finest clothes and head to our favorite local spot, a small beach hut that is lit only by the glow of the tiki torches. Without any electricity, there would be nothing to distract us from exploring our past and staring deeply into each other's eyes.

As the night went on and the drinks flowed, we would become more carefree and flirtatious. She lightly twirls her hair and lets the red strap of her gown fall ever-so slightly off of her shoulder. The night would end with us in our hot tub staring at the night sky. Without the ambient light of the city we grew up in, the stars fill the sky in a bright mosaic of god's infinite imagination. As the universe grows larger and we grow smaller, the significance of the time we have left on this planet becomes more important.
